Anett Kontaveit trolls herself after blowing seven MPs against Barbora Krejcikova

World No. 7 Anett Kontaveit admitted she had her chances against third-seeded Barbora Krejcikova but simply failed to convert. Kontaveit, seeded at No. 4, fell just short of reaching the Sydney final. Krajcikova, the 2021 French Open champion, recovered from a first set disaster to beat Kontaveit 0-6 6-4 7-6 (12).

Kontaveit blew seven match points against Krejcikova. “I had my chances, but she played great on the match points. I don’t think there was much in it. It was an extremely close match and it was good level, and I was pretty happy with it,” Kontaveit said after the loss, per WTA Insider.

“The main doubt was can I keep producing this level that I was producing last year? I was very happy to see that I did manage to bring the level again and started the year off well with a positive mindset and was really enjoying myself out there on the court.”

Kontaveit lost after two and a half hours of play. After losing a thriller, Kontaveit trolled herself.

“I think from both sides it was a really, really tough match,” Krejcikova said after the match.

“I think we played wonderful tennis. It was very, very tight, and I’m really happy that I was able to hold the nerves better and that I won this match.” Kontaveit made a convincing start to the match as she broke Krejcikova three times to dominantly win the opener.

After losing the first set, Krejcikova bounced back in the second set as she claimed her first break of the match in the ninth game, before serving out for a decider in the 10th game. Krejcikova started the third set with an early break but Kontaveit broke back in the fourth game.

Kontaveit had three match points in the 12th game and four more in the tie-break but Krejcikova saved them all to book a place in the Sydney final.
