American tennis star Amanda Anisimova revealed a funny scene from Rome as she wished Belinda Bencic good luck in her next match, not realizing that she’s her next opponent. On Tuesday, Anisimova overcame Tereza Martincova 6-2 0-6 6-4 to progress into the Rome second round.
Next up for Anisimova will be a third career meeting versus Bencic. Anisimova and Bencic met for the first time on the grass courts of Mallorca in 2019. Back then, Bencic claimed a straight-set win. At this year’s Australian Open, Anisimova got her revenge as she saw off Bencic in straight sets.
“After the match I saw [Bencic] and I was talking to her and I was like, ‘Good luck tomorrow!’,” Anisimova told WTA insider. “Then I realized that I’m playing her. I played her in Australia and she’s a really good player.
I’m sure we’ll have another good match. We always play very well against each other so I’m looking forward to it.”
Anisimova survived the Martincova challenge
Anisimova had two break points in the opening game but failed to convert as Martincova served out the opening game.
Anisimova maybe didn’t get her first break in the opening game but broke Martincova in the third and fifth games to open a comfortable 4-1 lead. Martincova got one break back in the sixth game to reduce the deficit to 4-2 but Anisimova earned her third break of the set in the seventh game.
In the eighth game, Anisimova served out for the first set. After losing the first set, Martincova bounced back in style as she broke Anisimova three times in the second set to force a decider. Anisimova regained her focus at the start of the third set and she earned the first break of the decider in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead.
Anisimova faced two break points in the eighth game but saved them to open a 5-3 lead. In the 10th game, Anisimova realized her first match point to complete a three-set win.
