Novak Djokovic is through to his 16th Rome Masters quarter-final following a convincing 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Stan Wawrinka. Novak defeated Stan for the 21st time in 27 matches and remained perfect against the Swiss in the Masters 1000 encounters, claiming the 11th win from as many meetings.
Djokovic claimed 23 points more than Wawrinka, serving at 75% and defending three out of four break chances. Stan landed 42% of the first serve in, and could not do much from there. He gave away over half of the points behind the initial shot and suffered five breaks from seven chances offered to Novak.
The Serb tamed his strokes nicely and fired 15 winners and 13 unforced errors to bring the victory home in an hour and 15 minutes. The Swiss hit a double fault in the encounter’s opening game to suffer a break and push Novak in front.

Djokovic confirmed the lead with an ace down the T line in the second game, and Wawrinka got his name on the scoreboard in the next one with a powerful serve.
Novak brought the fourth game home at love with an unreturned serve, and Stan responded with another powerful serve in game five to reduce the deficit. Djokovic delivered the sixth game with a service winner, the most dominant stroke so far.
The Serb placed a perfect drop shot winner in the seventh game for another break and closed the opener with an unreturned serve in the next one for 6-2 in 30 minutes. Wawrinka squandered game points at the beginning of the second set and got broken to fall further behind.
Novak netted a forehand in the second game to face the first break point and saved it after Stan’s backhand mistake. The Serb faced two more break chances in the fourth game, fending them off and opening a 3-1 lead after a drop shot winner.
Djokovic broke again in game five to extend the advantage and move closer to the finish line. Wawrinka pulled one break back in game six after Djokovic’s loose forehand before losing serve at 15 to find himself 5-2 behind.
Novak served for the victory in game eight and sealed the deal with a volley winner that propelled him into the last eight.
