Buffalo police say that several people have suffered injuries and a suspect is in custody after a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in the city.
Police said the shooting took place at Tops in the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue.
It was not immediately clear how many people had been hit or how serious their injuries are.

The Buffalo News reports that 10 people have been killed at the Tops grocery store, quoting a police official speaking at the scene.
The paper quotes the official as saying: “It’s like walking onto a horror movie, but everything is real. It is armageddon-like. It is so overwhelming.”
The official said that one of those killed was a recently retired Buffalo police officer who was working as a security guard at the store.
No motive has yet been suggested for the shooting.

One witness told CNN that the gunman was wearing Army fatigues and a bullet-proof vest. The eyewitness said the man, who he described as white, held a firearm under his chin before putting it on the ground and surrendering to police officers.

The governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, was among those urging local people to avoid the area and follow directions from police.

The police department said a suspect was in custody.
