World No. 5 Maria Sakkari says it is good for tennis that Serena Williams and added everyone will want to avoid the American at Wimbledon. Last Tuesday, 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams took to Instagram to announce her Wimbledon participation.
Williams retired injured her Wimbledon first round match a year ago and she is now set to return to singles action 12 months later at The All England Club. “I grew up watching Serena and Venus because my grandma is a tennis freak,” Sakkari said, as quoted on the WTA website.
“I just feel like it’s very good for tennis that she is back and I think that it brought a little bit more suspense. I’m sure that everyone wants to avoid her, especially if she wins a few matches. She will start feeling good about her game and she is Serena Williams.
She is the greatest female athlete of all time.”
Sakkari, Paula Badosa hope to avoid Williams
When Badosa was asked about Williams’ return, she pretty much said the same as Sakkari. Badosa said she thinks it’s good for the that Williams is returning and admitted she will be hoping to avoid playing the American at Wimbledon.
“Of course I don’t want to play against her,” Badosa said. “I hope the draw goes for another player, because of course no one wants to play against Serena and less on grass. So let’s pray for that.”
The head-to-head record between Sakkari and Williams stands at 1-1. In 2020, Sakkari and Williams clashed twice during the summer hard court swing. Sakkari won their first meeting as she recovered from a set down to beat Williams in the Cincinnati last-16.
Two weeks later, Williams got her revenge and defeated Sakkari in the US Open round-of-16. On the other side, Badosa and Williams have never played against each other on the WTA Tour.
