Getting into the upper echelons of the Ferrari elite isn’t as easy as handing over gobs of cash. Oftentimes one needs to work their way into the club by purchasing more common models. This 1990 F40 is a sure way to jump head first into the deep end though and it’s one of the finest examples anyone could hope to own.
Famously known as the very last model that Enzo himself signed off, the F40 is one of the giants in the history of supercars. Under the hood is a 478 hp (356 kW) twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V8 that feeds all those ponies to the rear tires through a five-speed manual transmission. From every angle, this is a legendary car from its styling to its performance.
This particular example is one of the very few that have enough mileage on them that a new owner could drive it a little without lowering its value. Of course, when the new owner realizes just how clean it is they might struggle to tarnish its near-perfect condition. After a full two-year restoration was completed in 2017, it went on to win major awards.
Watkins Glen was home to the 2018 Ferrari Club of America National Meet where this exact car won a Platinum Award in its class along with a Special Merit Award. Chief Judge at that event, Brian Crall, called it one of the most authentic F40s he’s ever judged. Coming from the mouth of an unquestioned expert in the field that’s saying a lot. Add to it that it’s in such condition after driving 15,542 miles over the course of its 30-plus year life.
Pricing estimate for the auction is listed at $2.35 to $2.65 million. It’ll go over the block at Mecum’s Monterey event taking place between August 18th and the 20th and given its condition, it’ll be interesting to see what the final price is when the hammer comes down.
