Holger Rune says that the rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal is the one that “stands out” for him, as he feels it is the most iconic rivalry in tennis history. The 19-year-old Rune greatly enjoyed watching Federer against Nadal when he was a child.
Rune acknowledged that Novak Djokovic’s rivalries against Federer and Nadal cannot be overlooked, but noted that Federer against Nadal is simply the one that stands out. This year marks the 50th anniversary since the launch of the ATP Tour and the ATP asked several players to reveal their favorite rivalry.
“I personally think Federer vs. Nadal has been incredibly interesting. I’ve seen a lot of their matches and yes I would say the same for Federer – Novak and Rafa-Novak but growing up Federer-Nadal really stands out to me,” Rune said in a video for the ATP.
Rublev also agrees with Rune that Federer and Nadal have shared the greatest tennis rivalry. In the 2008 Wimbledon final, widely regarded as one of the greatest matches in tennis history, Nadal bested Federer to win his first Championship title.
“My favorite rivalry in tennis is the Wimbledon final between Rafa and Roger, I mean there have been many unreal matches, but the first thing that came to mind was the Wimbledon final between Rafa and Roger, maybe in 2008 Rublev said.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, runner-up at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, mentioned the rivalries between the big three when asked about the best rivalries in tennis. “Well, for sure the ones I’ve enjoyed the most are Roger-Rafa, Djoko-Rafa, Federer-Djoko.”
Andy Roddick comments on Federer
Former World No. 1 Andy Roddick is the latest to comment on Roger Federer’s return. “He’s aware of what he was coming back from after these previous knee surgeries,” Roddick said.
“He wasn’t moving that well, he was a shadow of what we know as Roger. To add another knee surgery to that and to have him come back with that losy time, obviously, he knows it is going to be an uphill battle,” he added.
“We need patience,” Roddick said. “It’s horrible to see the icons of the game to go out because their bodies give out. I personally hope that he can come back and leave on his own terms. I don’t care if he’s as good as he once was, that’s unimportant to me at this point,” the American added. “What’s important is that he gets the goodbye that he wants.”
