and, Showdown is underway at a US Senate committee between Democrats Republicans and US trade representative Robert lighthizer the key issue Canada what happened well u.s. Senators Jen will they are not happy ever since the retaliatory tariff that have been slapped on the United States after they put on National Security tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum well American Business are hurting and senators are not happy about it they’re questioning the administration’s motive and intent on these National Security terrorist and they’re not really happy with the answer is that they’re getting from the US trade ambassador Montage of some of what was said earlier on today take a look at doing tremendous damage to our own domestic industries by using the National Security justification if you made a decision that is in the National then you have to put a program that actually works section 232 actually it’s Canada yes or no certified a country is the country of who uses our equipment is the country who has been with us every step of the way and I guess again are there national security threat to United States nobody’s declaring war Aaron unfriendly neighbor they’re obviously not there a great Ally it up and and certainly one of America’s closest friends and closest I don’t know what kind of date or information has would show that Canadian Imports other products would impair the functioning of our steel industry find a light Heiser had sat another Senators agree that the issue is with China on creating an oversupply of Steel right around the world Canada’s put in place measures to limit transshipment so that is when China for example will ship steel and aluminum to Canada with the hopes of having that a flood United States but really senators are saying Hey listen the problem here is China it’s not Canada back off our allies and just quickly what does this mean then for the future of NAFTA because earlier this morning I thought I read There were some positive tox coming out of that it and it could be back on Ted Claus is a no-go for that country something similar to what we heard I Canada say and we hear that a sunset Clause effectively would mean a lot of uncertainty around the trade deal which is counter-productive and intuitive to the purpose of the deal as a whole so we’re hearing that talks are going to be moving forward exactly when and at what rate details have been firmed up
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is asked if Canada is a national security threat, justifying the tariffs on aluminum and steel.
