John McDonnell today warned Labour must ‘sort out’ its anti-Semitism problem despite Jeremy Corbyn’s continued silence over his ally’s rant about ‘Jewish Trump fanatics’. The shadow chancellor’s humble tone today struck a stark contrast with the Labour leader refusing to comment on the scandal when confronted by journalists today. Mr Corbyn – who last night apologised for his own attendance at an event where Israeli policy was compared to the Nazis – has made no comment on a leaked recording of Peter Willsman’s vile tirade at a meeting of Labour’s ruling committee. In a new tape that emerged today Mr Willsman claimed in 2016 to have been a ‘mate’ of Mr Corbyn for 40 years and said the Labour leader was texting him from World War 1 commemorations on the Somme for advice on Shami Chakrabarti’s report into Labour anti-Semitism. Evidence of the close relationship between Mr Corbyn and Mr Willsman will fuel anger about the Labour leader’s refusal to speak out against his friend.
