Paul Willer, now 90, stayed at Attlee’s home in London aged 10 after fleeing Germany with his mother and younger brother on the eve of war in 1939. Tonight he greeted the former Labour leader’s granddaughter Jo Roundell Greene in Westminster as Parliament marks 80 years since the Kindertransport, a rescue effort to save thousands of Jewish children from Hitler. Attlee, widely regarded as one of the 20th century’s great Prime Ministers, never publicised his rescue of the child refugee, which only came to light this week.
