if you are offended by guns tweets you were completely justified in doing so they are gross tweets but you should also recognize where those instances of outrage you’re coming from and who is perpetuating them so on July 20th there’s an old tweets from writer director James Gunn who is most known for writing directing the Guardians of the Galaxy films by Mike cernovich was a bit of an alt-right provocateur and as a result Disney and Marvel decided to fire James Gunn from the third Guardians movie is really interesting place now where tweets can be weaponized against us for very explicitly political purposes and the prettiest thing about the way write used guns tweets to get him fired and exact this kind of punitive measures against somebody who by all accounts did not exhibit that behavior in the future and had work to rectify it is really troubling for the most part I think are you that on the left it is at least it is born of a desire to improve the discourse and the the acceptability of of certain people certain marginalized groups and diminishing hate speech whereas with certain people on the alt-right they take those same principles and act on them and bad faith it’s not really born of any Earnest desire to bring down bad people or make people who say problem things accountable for their actions appear calculation and they count on people being upset to do that and it’s all part of this underlying strategy by the alt-right to confirm their idea there is a very nice good idea that we don’t actually believe that the world can be a better place that the world isn’t dark cynical place and everyone secretly has all of these dark impulses and that to that to say otherwise is the position yourself as above someone else they called virtue signaling I think the most important tell in figuring out whether or not something is bogus or not bogus is seen whether the people who are actually signal-boosting these problematic you’re actually upset by them or if they’re just doing it to weaponize the outrage of those who are upset by it so I think the most important thing we need to do is take a step back think about why were outraged for this particular thing and making sure we’re doing it for the right reasons and not lending Mo to somebody who wants to use our own outrage against us play NBC News viewers thanks for checking out our YouTube channel subscribe by clicking on that button down here and click on any of the videos over here to watch the latest interviews show highlights and digital exclusive thanks for
In July, Disney fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn after prominent alt-right personality Mike Cernovich re-surfaced old tweets of his dating back to 2008. Cernovich’s outrage campaign was a victory for the alt-right, says culture writer Clint Worthington, and a loss for anyone who cares about nuance.
